Roads in Thailand are generally of a decent standard, with major connecting roads all paved. Roads in more rural regions tend to be of a much poorer quality, with some impassable in monsoon season. Bus services operate out of most towns and offer cheap, though uncomfortable travel to many destinations in the country – air conditioned, comfortable buses are available for booking at a higher price. Taxis in cities are one of the best ways to get around, with standard cars, tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis all available, along with river taxis where they are necessary. Fares can be negotiated or metered, but are generally reasonable. Thailand is home to an excellent rail service covering the majority of the country – the main problem raised is the slowness of services, but other than that trains are praised as comfortable and cheap. Most timetables are published in English and there are discount fares available sometimes. Train is by far the most popular way of getting around the country and adds a whole new element to any visitor’s stay, letting them take in the scenery at a leisurely, comfortable pace. A great number of river-faring transport is available throughout the country, from water taxis to luxury cruises and tourist excursions, every water-based transport is covered and prices are low. Boats are another great way of getting around the country, and though not as comfortable as trains still offer and experience to be savoured. Services are limited in monsoon season. Internal flights are available through Thailand to around 22 domestic airports. There are a number of dirt cheap flights available to internal destinations, though services can be unreliable and overbooked.
